Exercise is a key pillar in a healthy lifestyle, contributing to physical fitness, mental well-being, and disease prevention. What is often overlooked, is that regular exercise supports women’s reproductive health.
In this article, we will explore this in detail, so you can feel comfortable in the idea of exercising for reasons outside of your body composition
For both men and women, exercise supports hormonal balance, enhances fertility, and improves the overall functioning of the reproductive system.
In this article, we’ll explore the connection between exercise and reproductive health, including how the right type of physical activity can benefit hormone regulation, menstrual health, fertility, and pregnancy.
Hormones play a critical role in reproductive health, regulating processes like menstruation, ovulation, and pregnancy. Exercise directly impacts the endocrine system (the one responsible for your fertility), and supports the balance of hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
There are three ways in which exercise can influence these hormones:
Regular physical activity can have a positive impact on menstrual health by promoting balanced hormones, reducing stress, and improving overall circulation. For many women, this means fewer PMS symptoms, lowered uncomfortable cramping, and more consistent menstrual cycles.
It’s important to note that over-exercising or engaging in intense physical activity for prolonged periods can disrupt menstrual cycles, just as lowering calories for too long or becoming too lean can. This occurs because extreme physical stress can lower body fat levels and disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which controls reproductive hormone production. Therefore, finding the right intensity and duration of exercise is key.

For individuals trying to conceive, maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise is essential. Exercise has been shown to improve fertility in both men and women in several ways:
Additionally, for women with PCOS, exercise can be particularly beneficial in improving fertility. PCOS is often associated with insulin resistance and irregular ovulation, but regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity, regulate cycles, and increase the likelihood of ovulation. Exercise is extremely important during pregnancy, and is beneficial for mother and baby. Engaging in safe, low-impact activities during pregnancy can support reproductive health by boosting circulation, managing weight gain, regulating blood sugar, lowering inflammation, and reducing physical discomfort associated with your changing body.
