I am on a mission to educate, inspire women to overcome health challenges (even if it seems impossible!) and step into the life of their dreams
Potatoes are one of those foods women avoid because, well, CARBS. But, did you know you can lose weight and eat carbs at the same time?
And, potatoes are good for you.
Keto will tell you that potatoes make you ‘fat’. They tell you that it ‘spikes insulin’ and this mechanism directly makes you gain fat, or prevents you from losing fat, etc. So people avoid potatoes, but in a carb-deprived state end up binging on other no-so-healthful carb foods (those packet ones laden with sugar, salt and fat – the real culprits), when they could just be enjoying carbs and potatoes on the daily.
Know that fat-loss is all about eating mostly whole foods, whilst ensuring you eat just under what you would require in order to maintain your weight (keeping in mind if you eat too much food you gain weight, and if you eat too little you lose weight – that’s how it works).
So let’s compare all the delicious types of potato;
As you can see they’re high in carbs, but mostly starch. There is some sugar (found only in the orange and purple potatoes) but this is a naturally occurring sugar kind, matched with (almost) equal amounts of fibre. This means it will digest slowly, help feed your good gut bacteria, and fuel your daily life. You’ll get this many carbs from just a handful of lollies, too but without the beneficial nutrients.
Each type of potato has varied micronutrients, but any kind of potato is good for you in sensible amounts. They can also be enjoyed in many ways – baked, mashed, in the air-fryer thick like hot chips or thin like potato chips.
For extra taste (and more balance) add some butter or olive oil, and side with a piece of lean meat – delicious!
So if you like potatoes, you should eat potatoes, and even more-so you should try them all. The purples are my faves, chop up 150gms worth into ‘chips’, pop them in the air fryer for 10mins on 200 degrees – delish!
Note that there are three varieties of sweet potatoes – in Australia, the purple ones are usually white on the outside, the purple outside are white on the inside!
